Cantloupes - Tips

Cantloupes

The melon that Americans call cantaloupe is truly a muskmelon. True cantaloupes are mainly grown in Europe and have a rough, warty surface quite different from the melons grown in the United States. The American "cantaloupe" is the most nutritious melon of all and is related to the squash family, somewhere between the winter and summer squash in terms of nutrition.
Cantaloupes have the high water content and low calorie count of the summer squash and the high levels of beta-carotene, potassium and Vitamin C found in the winter squash like pumpkins and butternut squash.
Cantaloupes grow best in warm to hot weather. California is the number-one melon supplier. In the peak of the melon season from June through October the San Joaquin Valley in central California supplies 95% of the cantaloupes bought in North America. Most imports come from Mexico and Central America, particularly Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Canteloupe Nutrition

Selection and Storage:

The netting on the cantaloupe, that raised surface all around the melon, should cover the melon completely. Avoid very small cantaloupes, less than 5 inches in diameter, and ones with a large bald or smooth spot on their surface. However, it's all right for one side of the netting to be bleached where the melon touched the ground. Look for cantaloupes that have a smooth stem end or "full slip," illustrating that the melon detached from the stem of the plant naturally, with little effort. An unacceptable "half-slip" detachment will leave some stem fibers at the end.

It is also important to look for melons that have a good fragrance, because if it smells good, it will usually taste good. Melons should be firm with a little give, not overly soft, which means the melon is overripe. This is particularly true of the stem end, which should yield to pressure but not be soft or mushy. Good moisture content means that the melon will be heavy for its size. Shake the melon; if you hear liquid sloshing around inside, the melon is probably overripe. Avoid melons that show cracks, shriveling, or other obvious signs of poor quality.

Melons will ripen after they are picked, but their sugar content won't increase. It will take up to four days for melons to ripen at room temperature. Because melons are ethylene sensitive, they will ripen more rapidly in the presence of ethylene-producing fruit such as bananas and pears.

Don't refrigerate melons unless they become too ripe or have been cut. Whole ripe or cut melons should be stored at between 40°F and 45°F, and a whole ripe melon will last in the refrigerator about three days. Leave the seeds inside a cut melon until you're ready to eat it, to help keep the melon moist. Cut melons should be tightly wrapped, and always taste better if they are brought to room temperature before you eat them. Melons don't freeze well.

Preparation:

It is suggested that you wash cantaloupes thoroughly before slicing to remove any potential bacteria. The easiest way to enjoy a melon is to cut it in half, remove the seeds, and eat a half or quarter (depending on its size), scooping out the flesh with a teaspoon.
Cantaloupe Seasons To cube a cantaloupe, quarter the cantaloupe lengthwise and slice off the usable fruit from the rind with a sharp knife, and then cube as desired. Another method is to slice off the rind with a sharp chef's knife and slice lengthwise (to the desired width), and cut crosswise into cubes. This method works best when you have a lot of melon cubes to do.

Cantaloupe balls can be scooped right from a melon half without removing the rind. Melon ballers come in various sizes and are handy not just for melons, but for other fruits as well. A twist of the wrist and a little twirl will give you pretty, round shapes.

Make a classic hors d'oeuvre by wrapping cubed melon in a thin slice of prosciutto, and securing with a toothpick, or for a first course, lay a few thin slices of cantaloupe across a plate, and drape or lightly wrap sheer slices of prosciutto over them.

If you discover that a cantaloupe is not quite ripe after you've cut it open, it can be rescued with some orange or melon liqueur, orange or other citrus juice, a little sugar, and maybe some minced candied ginger for added flavor. Overripe melon can be used for cold melon soup or a smoothie with some yogurt, honey, and orange juice.

Benefits of Mint

Health Benefits of Mint:

Mint, the well known mouth and breath freshener that is scientifically known as Mentha, has more than two dozen species and hundreds of varieties. It is an herb that has been used for hundreds of years for its remarkable medicinal properties.

The market is full of products like tooth paste, chewing gum, breath fresheners, candy and inhalers which have mint as their base element. Most of us are familiar with the refreshing application of mint, but it has far more to offer than that.

Health Benefits of Mint Leaves:

The health benefits of mint include the following:

Digestion: Mint is a great appetizer or palate cleanser, and it promotes digestion. It also soothes stomachs in cases of indigestion or inflammation. When you feel sick to your stomach, drinking a cup of mint tea can give you relief. Also, if you are someone who travels long distances via plane or boat, the menthol oil derived from mint can be very soothing for nausea and related motion sickness.

Nausea & Headache: Again, the strong and refreshing aroma of mint is a quick and effective remedy for nausea. Even just the smell of mint oil or freshly crushed mint leaves or the use of any product with mint flavor, and your stomach issues will be alleviated. In fact, many people keep menthol oil or mint-flavored products with them at all time to avoid nausea. Balms with a mint base or basic mint oil, when rubbed on the forehead and nose, gives quick relief in case of headache. Mint is a naturally soothing substance, so it can alleviate the inflammation and temperature rise that is often associated with headaches and migraines.

Respiratory Disorders and Coughs: The strong aroma of mint is very effective in clearing up congestion of the nose, throat, bronchi and lungs, which gives relief for respiratory disorders that often result from asthma and the common cold. As mint cools and soothes the throat, nose and other respiratory channels, it relieves the irritation which causes chronic coughing. This is the main reason why so many balms are based on mint. Unlike the inhalers that are based on aerosols, those with mint as the fundamental component tend to be more effective and eco-friendly as well.

Asthma: Regular use of mint is very beneficial for asthma patients, as it is a good relaxant and relieves congestion. That being said, using too much mint in this way can also irritate the nose and throat.

Breast Feeding: For many women, breastfeeding is a beautiful part of raising a child, but it can seriously damage your breasts and nipples. Studies have shown that mint oil can reduce the nipple cracks and nipple pain that so often accompany breastfeeding.

Depression and Fatigue: Mint is a natural stimulant, and the smell alone can be enough to charge your batteries and get your brain functioning on a high level again. If you are feeling sluggish, anxious, depressed, or simply exhausted, mint and its derivative essential oils can help. It can be ingested, applied topically in a salve form, or inhaled as a vapor, and all of those techniques can give you a much-needed boost! A popular way to get good results in an easy manner is to put a few drops of mint essential oil or menthol oil on your pillow at night and let it work on your body and mind while you sleep.

Skin Care and Pimples: While mint oil is a good antiseptic and anti-pruritic material, mint juice is an excellent skin cleanser. It soothes skin, and helps to cure infections and itchiness, as well as being a good way to reduce pimples, and it can even relieve some of the symptoms of acne. Its anti-pruritic properties can be used for treating insect bites like those of mosquitoes, honeybees, hornets, wasps, and gnats. The cooling sensation will relieve you of the irritating sensation to scratch, and the anti-inflammatory nature of mint will bring down swelling! In that same vein, mint oil is often a basic component of bug repellent products like citronella candles, because the strong aroma is unappealing to most insects.

Memory Loss: A recent study explored the effects that mint has on alertness, retention, and cognitive function. It found that people who frequently use chewing gum, whose major active ingredient is mint, had higher levels of memory retention and mental alertness than those who did not. The stimulant qualities of mint, once again, have shown yet another reason to pop that stick of gum in your mouth, or chew some leaves when you’re feeling less than brilliant!

Weight Loss: Aside from all the other health benefits of mint, it also can help in your efforts to lose weight in a healthy way! Mint is a stimulant, as we’ve already mentioned, but it also stimulates the digestive enzymes that absorb nutrients from food and consume fat and turn it into usable energy. Therefore, by adding mint to your diet, you are increasing the amount of fat that is being consumed and put to use, rather than being stored and contributing to your weight gain!

Female Sterility: There are mixed opinions regarding the role of mint in treating this condition. Some argue that prolonged use of menthol may cause sterility, reducing a woman’s ability to conceive by interfering with the production of ova and killing these gametes. This is due to the germicidal and insecticidal properties of mint, which are beneficial for so many other health concerns. Other research has claimed that men who smoke menthol cigarettes are more likely to suffer from impotency than those who smoke normal cigarettes. It is not certain whether this is due to the tobacco alone or if the mentholated aspect has anything do with it. Another group or researchers suggest that mint may actually be used to treat sterility in females. Suffice to say, a great deal of further research must be done on the effects of mint in both male impotency and female sterility.

Allergies and Hay Fever: Season allergies and hay fever (also known as rhinitis) affect millions of people around the world at certain times of the year. Extracts from mint leaves have been shown to inhibit the release of histamines, which often spur on the severe nasal symptoms that are associated with hay fever and seasonal allergies.

Cancer: Current research shows that certain enzymes that can be found in mint may help prevent and treat cancer.

Headaches: Peppermint oil may help relieve tension headache pain. For headache pain, try dabbing a few drops on your wrist or sprinkling a few drops on a cloth, then inhaling the aroma. You can also massage the oil directly onto your temples and forehead.

Hair and Skin: Try blending peppermint oil into your massage oil, shampoo, bodywash or body lotion. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that can help cool your skin and remove dandruff (and lice) from your scalp.

Muscle Pain: Peppermint may help to relieve muscle spasms and pain. Try massaging its essential oil onto sore muscles or adding it to your bath water for muscle pain relief.

Grapes-Tips

Tips for Selection and Storage:

Selection: Selection of a good quality product is pivotal if you are looking at reaping maximum benefits from it. As far as grapes are concerned, always choose those fruits that are plump, unblemished, evenly coloured and firmly attached to the stem. The best way to ensure that you are buying fresh grapes is to hold the bunch by its stem and shake them. If the grapes fall from the stem, it means that they have been stored for a long time and if they remain firmly attached, they are fresh. Bunches are held together if the stem is green. Green or white grapes are the sweetest if they have a yellowish colour with a tinge of amber while red grapes should be deeply coloured with no green areas. Sometimes grapes have a white coating on their surface. This coating, known as bloom, is a harmless natural substance that provides protection against the loss of moisture, fungus and decay. Avoid grapes with a soft or wrinkled skin or stems that are brown or brittle. This might be signs of freezing or drying. Grapes with bleached areas around the stem or leaking berries should also be avoided as they indicate poor quality or decay. It is a healthier choice to buy organic grapes as the ones grown conventionally are laden with harmful pesticides.

Storage: Apart from selection, proper storage of the grapes is also a pre requisite for keeping the fruits fresh and avoiding any injury or decay. Unwashed grapes should be kept in a plastic bag or airtight container and stored in the coolest part of the refrigerator. Grapes can be stored up to a week but their quality diminishes with time. Wash them well before serving.

Tips for Usage:

Eating:

Grapes like a few other fruits can be consumed either when fresh or frozen. Grapes should be removed from the refrigerator 30 minutes before eating to bring them to an ideal temperature of about 60F. Here are a few tips to serve fresh grapes:

Serving chilled grapes on a platter with a few varieties of cheese is an easy alternative for a fancy dessert.
Place some red grapes in a scooped half of a green honeydew melon and top it with yoghurt. Pairing this with toasted muffins makes for a nutritious breakfast. In addition to snacks, grapes can also form part of your meals. Try adding chilled grapes to pastas, chicken, sweet potato, fish, salads or pies. It can be served alongside a crusty bread or rolls.
Grapes along with cheese, sliced sweet onions and fresh thyme can be used as a topping on rolled puff pastry, and baked.
You can drop a few frozen grapes in champagne and other bubbly drinks. Grapes can suitably form part of ice-creams sodas, cocktails and sorbets.
